Review – Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel, co-written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck is a pretty unremarkable experience. It doesn’t really do anything that’s particularly memorable. The character of Carol Danvers is barely developed and I’m at a loss to find a reason to care about her or be excited about her inclusion in Avengers: Endgame. With Captain Marvel, it’s just a pretty bland, by the numbers Marvel movie that sure… made me laugh a couple of times and there were elements to its plot structure that I liked, but for the most part it’s a fairly forgettable film that I’m struggling to find the enthusiasm to write about. Anyway, let’s dive into the particulars of the movie and see why it didn’t really capture my excitement.

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool, directed by Paul McGuigan, offers charming, intimate little snapshots of a touching relationship, that warms the heart. There is something so beautiful in this films simplicity; with its lovely characters, its sweet story, the time in which it’s set and the places it goes – it puts you in a wonderful state of mind. It of course pulls on the heart-strings and tells a story that will, at times hurt, but it’s worth it. Let’s explore deeper into why the film is worth it, in my review, shall we?

Review – 20th Century Women

20th century Women, written and directed by Mike Mills, is a film so full of life; the vibrant, messy, spontaneity of life. This is a film that juggles a deeply nuanced and unique set of characters who all feel so brilliantly explored and so wonderfully crafted. Though at times I found it to be oddly structured, there was something so magnetic about the experience of watching this film; one that felt freeing in how open and exploratory it was. I could go on gushing about this film, but I’d rather move onto the actual review where I can continue to do so, but also point out a few things that still nagged away at me. And so onto the review we go.
