Review – Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers Infinity War

Warning! This review contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War!

Avengers: Infinity War, directed by Joe & Anthony Russo, is absolutely a success in what Marvel set out to do 10 years ago. Now, a film of this magnitude; with the number of characters it was juggling, and the scope of the threat it is dealing with; means it of course falters in a few places – there are elements to this film that absolutely didn’t work for me. But in the context of the larger film; what it had to juggle; what it needed to accomplish; and the massive audience that it has to serve – especially after 10 years’ worth of well-loved films leading up to it. I think Marvel and the Russo brothers have accomplished what could have easily been a massive bin fire full of disappointment and broken dreams. Having said that though, there is one glaring issue to this film that could easily bring all those positive comments / feelings crumbling down. So, now I have to try to review this film in a coherent way; touching upon all the necessary little moments that need to be talked about. Wish me luck.

Review – Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok, directed by Taika Waititi, is… a Marvel film. It is fun, entertaining and had me laughing along and enjoying the spectacle of it all. It seems that thanks to other Marvel films, they’ve finally found the voice and tone of a Thor film and they capitalise on that find well. The film is also aided by the comically inclined joy of director, Taika Waititi who guides the film on a journey filled with jokes. If I’m begin honest, this review will pretty much be more of the same when it comes to talking about another Marvel film but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things worth saying… I think. Anyway, on with the review. Read more

Review – Doctor Strange

doctor-strange

Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson, took its time to find its momentum, but once it did, it began to offer one of the most stimulating Marvel films in some time. Visuals that truly wow and worlds with infinite possibilities, takes the previously built out Marvel universe and turns it on its head. Now this isn’t a film that 100% knocked it out of the park – there are in fact quite a few glaring issues with the film – and so ‘Doctor Strange’ is a film that I’m interested and eager to breakdown. So let’s get on with it. Read more

Star Trek Films: From Worst to Best

With Star Trek Beyond coming out in cinemas, I thought it’d be fun to run down all of the other Star Trek films, from my least favourite to my favourite. I’ve seen all of these films quite a few times – that’s what happens when your brother is a devout Star Trek fan. I don’t think that some of these films get the love or the acclaim that they deserve, while others certainly deserve to fade into obscurity.

So I’m going start with the worst of the bunch and work my way up to the crème-de-la-crème, and I want to STRESS that this is my personal ranking and opinions, and am in no way saying this is the definitive listing of the films; just a little bit of fun, that’s all. Let’s get started: Read more

Review – Black Mass

Black Mass

Black Mass, directed by Scott Cooper is a film with an absolutely captivating lead performance by Johnny Depp at its core. Unfortunately the rest of the film focuses on a bland (what should be side plot) that over the 2 hour run time is constantly circling the drain, until it inevitably is sucked down into complete disinterest.
